Everything nowadays is a piece of technology and now so are books. Many purists argue against the rise of the likes of the iPad and the Amazon Kindle, but the truth is there for all to see; the ebook is here and it's here to stay.
The most popular format through most ebooks is the EPUB format, a format that extends across many millions of bought ebook readers and millions of books to go with them. So how do you go about converting your book to EPUB?
When you don't have a digital copy of the book itself, as many don't because of the book originally being produced long before word processors were even at the back of our minds, the only way it can be done is by a professional document scanning company. A lot of professional document scanning companies will have scanners that can handle the requirements of getting a book converted to EPUB or at least get it digitised for conversion. A few companies will also have overhead book scanners which are much more protective of the book as their light is not as intense on the book itself, protecting it. Depending on the quality, the age and the condition of your book these are all things you may want to consider and seek out a company with the right requirements for you.
Books can be scanned either as they are or they can be scanned having been taken to pieces. This is of course not an option if the book is very rare, it's just a time saving procedure, but the book can be scanned in its current state just as well.
To convert the book to EPUB, it will be scanned on a book scanner and the resulting images will then be saved onto a hard disk, usually in the PDF format. It is from here that the converted files will go through the process of OCR, which will make the book text-searchable on computers and ebook readers. From here, the final process will be to convert the book to EPUB format, having completed quality checks of the OCR.
This is the simplest and quickest way of going about getting a book converted to EPUB, and it is also one of the cheapest since it can be quite a quick process depending on the size and length of the book.
When the conversion of the book to EPUB format is done, you will receive the files back to be submitted to ebook store throughout the web including the ibooks store for Apple, the iPad using the EPUB format through all of their ebooks sold in their store, and there are many other stores worldwide where it can be sold for devices such as the Barnes and Noble NOOK.
Converting a book to EPUB can be a great way to breathe new life into the book itself and generate some income from it too, especially as up to 500,000 people are buying ebooks each quarter. It's just common sense to follow this path and take your books to the next level.
